Music Director Position for Concord Band

The Concord Band, a 65 member community band based in Concord, Massachusetts, is seeking a new Music Director/Conductor. The new Director will begin work in the spring of 2009, following the Band's 50th anniversary concert. The part time position involves full responsibility for all aspects of the musical activities of the Band, including selection of music, conduct of weekly rehearsals, preparation of program notes and all concert performances. The conductor works with an active board consisting of members of the Band. The Band s musicians are amateurs, with a variety of musical experience, who aspire to a high level of performance. The Band rehearses throughout the year with the exception of August and a portion of December. It performs approximately 15 concerts a year, including indoor programs of serious band literature and others with a more popular content, as well as a weekly series of outdoor programs in June and July at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Massachusetts. It is active in the commissioning of new music and it features guest artists at many of its concerts. More information about the Band can be found at its web site, http://www.concordband.org.

The ideal candidate is a person with extensive knowledge of band literature, substantial band conducting experience, knowledge of musicians who might be guest artists at Band concerts and composers who might accept commissions for new works, the ability to recruit, work positively with and motivate amateur musicians, ability as a composer and arranger, experience with program planning and development, experience with volunteer/community musical organizations, experience in community relations, the ability to work with an active Board, experience with fundraising, the ability to write, including newsletters and program notes. The Band is seeking someone with whom it can have an extended relationship, as it has had with its previous conductors.

Compensation will be negotiated.
